Great Gatsby Scarlet Letter Essay - 690 Words

Jason Bello AP English March 22, 2000 The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald are two novels, which address similar themes with completely opposite resolves. The authors use their main characters, Hester, Dimmesdale, Gatsby, and Daisy, in their respective works to present these themes. The action in both novels revolves around unfaithfulness, its effects on the characters, and the results of committing adultery, which prove to be antipode from one novel to the other. These antitheses can be found by a look at the different roles of adultery in the novels. One major theme found in both novels and addressed in different ways is adultery. This act of impurity was turned to a positive with the birth of Pearl, their personal spiritual growth, and their maturity. On the contrary, the love that Daisy and Gatsby had before their separation was pure. They were in love for all the right reasons, and stayed in touch while Jay entered the army. However, Daisy then fell in love with money and the man who brought it, Tom. When Gatsby returned, he tried to make their love work again, but his efforts were made through deceit, and illegal activities. These attempts to win Daisy through a false persona and money made Daisys love a possession, which could be won or even bought, and subsequently it became impure. These contradictions and paradox continue through the novel into the endings. The differing attitudes towards unfaithfulness in the novels result in differing conclusions for the characters. Although Hester and Dimmesdale do not consummate their relationship, their tribulations are not for naught. Both become better, more understanding, people because of their experiences. There is also the birth of Pearl to validate their affair. Daisy and Gatsby never end up together either. However, neither one is the better as a result of them having eloped. Design Of A Sustainable Design - 1251 Words

What we know today as sustainable architectural design began in the early 20th century; born and evolved from principles and theories of architects in addition to physical devices all which precursor those in today sustainable architecture. Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis. Answer: Introduction: A good research has to have proper methods of collecting and analyzing data which fully represents the element and scope which is being studied. This study makes an exploration of motivation on employee satisfaction and turnover at Credit Suisse. Methodology, therefore, outlines the many different tools, procedures, and methods which will be used to gather data for the study. What methodology does is that it looks at a given population, size of the sample, techniques used in sampling, research instrument, data collection tools and even tools which will be used in the analysis of data management (Taylor, Bogdan DeVault. 2015, 25). For this research, the qualitative approach was adopted. The reason for picking this approach is that qualitative research has its aim at gathering a very concrete understanding of behavior and the reason governing the observed behavior and generally, qualitative approach investigates the how and why of decision-making, unlike other approaches which just focus on what, when and where. A qualitative approach was chosen for this research because the information obtained is centered on the particular case under study. Because the study makes an exploration of the effects which motivation has on employee satisfaction and turnover present in quantitative researchs context, the research is therefore qualitative. Qualitative research gives emphasis on the values of observed variables in a place they are commonly found which their natural setting is. According to Flick (2015, 16), the methodology adopted in a research has to be aligned to the research questions. The methodologys language is very critical in shaping the research questions to be aligned with the suggested methodology management. Qualitative methodologies aim at understanding many of the lived human experiences, making a description of a culture or social phenomena or coming up with a theory which can be tested later in the research (Flick. 2015, 16). How this methodology relates to the research questions is that being qualitative, the research questions used in this research begin with phrases which include what, how and in what ways. Qualitative research questions also begin with these phrases because the phrases used in the beginning of the questions seek to find or create an open approach to collecting information. The qualitative research questions which are always open-ended provide a way for which comprehensive data is collected. The strengths and weakness of qualitative research are unique because on one hand there is the presence of perspective of data which needs to be collected and on the other, there are techniques of the information collector and his or her own unique observations which can ultimately alter the information in unimaginable ways. The strengths of qualitative research include the fact that the subject materials can be put under evaluation with much bigger detail this is seen where there are so many time restrictions which are placed in methods of research. The main purpose of time restrictions is to develop outcomes which are measurable so as to put metrics in place (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe, Jackson. 2012, 33). Qualitative research has its focus on subtleties of what can be found in the collected information and focuses less on the collected data metrics. Therefore this ensures that the data is enhanced to its highest level which makes it easy to analyze. For qualitative research, research frameworks can be very smooth and based on new or available information because it can adapt to the quality of information that is being collected. If the available data seems not to give any results, the research can seek to gather data with a perspective. This, therefore, creates more opportunities to find out important clues about a given subject instead of being confined to a perspective which is limited. Another strength of qualitative research is that its data has its basis on human observations and experiences and this is seen where unlike other research methods which rely on the minds operating system while disregarding the human mind, qualitative research embraces the instincts of the guts (Panneersevam. 2014, 6). Qualitative research is a process which is open-ended ad this can be seen where the qualitative researchs open-ended structures ensure that rational thoughts and superficial responses are deeply analyzed to collect information from emotional responses of individuals involved in the study. Lastly, qualitative data seek to create insights which are industry-specific because it gives brands and companies access to staff and consumer insights so that they can make changes accurately. The weaknesses of qualitative research include the fact that the quality of data a being gathered is very subjective because what one person sees as very important can also be viewed as very useless by somebody else. This individual perspective can bring about inaccuracy in the data collected. Another weakness is that for qualitative research, data rigidity is very difficult to demonstrate and assess because mostly the perspectives used are individual and the human mind usually remember what it wants and therefore difficulty is brought where researchers seek to make a demonstration of the validity of data. Another weakness is seen whereby the analysis or mining of data which is gathered in qualitative research is hard and therefore time-consuming. This is basically because of the vast details which are often collected when performing qualitative research and therefore sorting through all the data takes a lot of time. Lastly, the researcher influence usually has a negative effect on the observation and skills of a qualitative research this is because if a researcher includes biases in the research, the outcome will be influenced (Palinkas, Horwitz, Green Hoagwood, 2015, 534). Other methods of gathering data will not be applicable in this research because qualitative research ensures that individualistic data is gathered and analyzed on deeper levels. Therefore for the case of employee satisfaction and turnover at Credit Suisse, qualitative research will ensure that new insights will be gained on matters relating to employee satisfaction, employee turnover and lastly the emotional reasoning processes of employees and therefore the company can be able to make changes to favor the employees and make them stay motivated and remain working for Credit Suisse. When the research makes connections of the information gathered, the information can lead to experiences which are personalized and bring value to the companys services and products. Data collection tools and techniques, sampling and sample size Both primary and secondary data will be collected during the study. The techniques which will be used include a review of existing data, interviewing, observations and administration of a written questionnaire (Brinkmann. 2014, 1009). Primary data collection will include data collected from Credit Suisses management level, junior staff and senior staff by the researcher. For secondary data collection, the researcher will collect the data from the internet, newspapers, journals, textbooks, and publications from Credit Suisse. When it comes to the research population, the Credit Suisses entire members in Australia are 59 and will constitute the research population and they are selected because they will give in-depth analysis and coverage of the findings and results and the Australian branch of Credit Suisse is near the researcher. For the sampling size, a sample size of 59 respondents are chosen and the rationale for choosing the sample size of 59 is to assist in giving clear analysis and coverage for findings and results. The sampling technique which will be used for this research is non-probability sampling and most specifically the sampling method which will be adopted is purposive sampling and it will be used to select the interviews respondents. Purposive sampling involves grouping the study areas elements which are essentially groups of characteristics which are identifiable and then later purposive methods will be used to make a selection of the elements and respondents. Because of the spread nature of the study, this is the most suitable method of reaching the respondents, therefore, the process will involve the selection of employees and managers to make a constitution of the sample size and essentially, the sample was selected based on the studys established objectives (Palinkas, Horwitz, Green Hoag wood, 2015, 534). Ethical issues and how to address them. When collecting data, ethical standards must be maintained at the highest level and upheld so that the participants of the research are protected. To ensure the protection of the participants, a research plan must clearly outline the measures which will be taken to ensure security is guaranteed in all aspects. Because this research is qualitative, questionnaires, interviews, and observations are used and while designing questionnaires, an ethical issue to be cautious of is confidentiality of the responses and identity of the respondent (Neuman Robson. 2014, 56). To address this issue, all the gathered data has to be anonymous and the questions should be well written to ensure it does not mislead and to avoid biases. It is also understandable that participants have the right of not completing a given questionnaire or withdrawing from the entire research. Ethical issues for interviews include confidentiality because they are personal and to address this issue, every recording made has to be confidential to protect the research participant. Any other party reading the research findings has to sign a confidentiality agreement while also ensuring that a detailed note on the finding is made to avoid confusion. Corporate Financial Management Project †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: What issues relating to the concept of the time value of money may be important in this decision-making process? Answer: There are various employees of tertiary sector who have proper involvement in offering services. Tertiary sector have three types of services, there is a need to generate their own fund in the form of superannuation funds as if they do not perform any activity under any employer. There are two plans on which basis employees generate their own contribution, these plans are investment choice plan and defined benefit plan. Employees must evaluate various factors before choosing any retirement plan between these two investment choice plan and defined benefit plan. Before making any kind of investment into these plans it is important to acquire clear set of knowledge regarding them and select the appropriate plan accordingly. (Arnold, 2013) Defined benefit plan Defined benefit plan is used to classify the sum of amount that will be receiving by the employee at the starting point of this plan. An amount that is to be received by the employee at the time of retirement is based on the necessity of employee under this plan. Both the parties, employee and employer make contribution of some particular amount and that is according to the salary of an employee, its age and time period of serving or going to be served. (Aslan, 2015)This plan, defined benefit plan is used by the employee to make growth in their earnings. It is to be assumed that final salary plan is an ordinary plan in defined benefit plan that is to be used for retirement to calculate their pension through some essential variables and these are defined as below: Pensionable service In this service, pension is given to an employee based on time duration of employees service. (Bacon, 2010) Pensionable earnings This is considered as the employee pays estimation that will be withdrawn at retirement. Accrual rate It decides that what part of amount an employee is going to be received at the end of year, according to this plan. There is a method to calculate the amount of employees pension in defined benefit plan which is described as follows: (Cox et al., 2013) Time duration of service * Employees pay at the retirement time * Accrual rate Employees of tertiary sector will be received the pension amount that is totally depend upon the time period of service, employees pay and accrual rate. Under this retirement amount, employees are capable to make their own involvement in respect to funds on which basis they can get pension at the time of retirement. Under this plan, employees can only acquire benefit when defined benefit plan is to be executed. This plan is appropriate for the employees of tertiary sector as it involved some benefits regarding taxation. Unfunded defined benefit plan There are two types of defined benefit plan and at the time of executing defined benefit plan employee needs to choose any one between funded defined benefit plan and unfunded defined benefit plan. Under unfunded defined benefit plan employee cannot make any investment or create any asset in the same. And under funded defined benefit plan employee can make investment or create asset through their contribution. When the duration of employee service is completed then employee can generate funds by selling off the invested or asset that is created. Funded defined benefit plan is a major limitation that employee can only get amount at the maturity time but not in advance. Investment choice plan Retirement plan includes this plan i.e. investment choice plan in which employee can open its account with the company in which investment is to be made. Under this plan, employee can make numerous investment or single investment on the whole through the contribution of employee and employer or salary earned in a particular time period. This plan has a benefit that employee can terminate or change its investment into any other option by the affects of some factors. Employees, under this plan are also capable to manage their retirement amount. By choosing this plan employee can make investment according to their choice on which basis they can develop their own portfolio of asset for risk management in which they want to invest. . (Baker and Filbeck, 2013) Employee can use various strategies by means of using this plan. Investment choice plan includes stable funds, trustees fund, secured fund and etc. There are various factors that needs to be taken care of by the employees of tertiary sector for making their involvement in the defined benefit plan or in investment choice plan. Some factors are as under: Rate of Inflation Inflation rate is the rate in which value of money is decreased which increases the living costs. This factor should be considered first at the time of taking decision in respect to making retirement contribution. Inflation rate is considered as the essential element for the long term plans and for the defined benefit plan. Investments in defined benefit plan are made on long term basis and in this condition value of money decreases over period of time. So, as a result for this employees need to increase their retirement contribution. Risk profile In this factor, the level of risk which is taken by the tertiary sectors employee is being considered. The concepts of contribution as well as retirement funds are both different from each other. As compared to the investment choice plan, defined benefit plan seems to be less risky. Defined benefit plan directly connected with the market so it involves less risk and in invest choice plan more risk involves as there are various options for making an investment and some are connected to the equity or market. So, it is important for the employee of tertiary sector to evaluate the risk before making any investment. (Schreiber, 2016). Investment time duration To select contribution plan for retirement, proper time framing of investment that is to be made should be considered first. Employee first needs to decide whether the investment is made for short term basis or for long term. This plan is beneficial for the short duration as well. But on the other side, defined benefit plan is only beneficial for the long duration. So it is to be assumed that investment time duration is an essential tool for making investment. Financial objectives Every individual has its own financial goal. But at the time of deciding investment for the retirement it is important to focus on the financial aspects. It is all related to the employees risk taking capacity as if they want to raise more fund and are willing to take more risk, they would invest in investment choice plan otherwise if they want to get the income of pension at a stable rate then they can select defined benefit plan. (Valentine and Scott, 2011) Time value money and its related issues In this concept, the value of money is decreasing as years passes on in the future. It has an important role in deciding the investment plan for retirement. Regarding the value of money, defined benefit plan and investment choice plan both has separate concept and also uses different term to eliminate the risk. To making appropriate decision regarding the amount of retirement this term can be used. By time value money concept, the exact present amount of contribution for retirement and the amount that is going to be received at the time of retirement is calculated. Random market trends and inflation rate can be factors which provide proper support to the time value money concept in making decision. (Finch, 2010) This method is used to calculate the net value of contribution for the retirement and the amount of pension that will be received in future. The amount that will be received as retirement funds would be accustomed with the rate of inflation. In this method emphasis is made on the issues regarding cash flows (outflow and inflow) of contribution for retirement as well as on the amount that is to be received at the end of superannuation period. (Paramasivan and Subramanian, 2009) Recommendations On the basis of above description it is concluded that there are two investment plans available defined benefit plan and investment choice plan and from which investment choice plan is considered as well customised. For offering highest flexibility regarding executing and designing retirement plan as well as its cash inflow (amount of pension) and outflow (payments), this plan needs to be selected. Investment choice plan is also beneficial for the future in which retirement funds are assured and that cannot be increased. Under investment choice plan, planning regarding future could be enhances on the basis of situation of market. Efficient market hypothesis With the help of efficient market hypothesis, market position of an organization reflects by its commodity price or asset or stock. In another aspect, efficient market hypothesis is considered as the situation in which stock price of an entity or assets or market shares of any organization is identify by collecting the relevant set of information regarding organization (Narayan, Narayan, Popp and Ali, 2015). This hypothesis defines that the prices of stock or assets is at fair value so there is no probability of profit or loss in the stock market. It is identified on the basis of efficient market hypothesis situations and theories that on accordance to the several factors available into the market, price of asset or stock has been decided. Therefore, it is considered as an easy task to choose shares or stocks for investment without implementing any strategies. Earlier, some factors like market trends, past information regarding stocks or shares, market condition, market information h ave not been considered to put the price of stock or assets. On this basis, the stock or assets prices do not make any movement due to changes into the market. (Superannuation: How to deduct superannuation contributions by passive investment trusts, 2013). Pension Fund managers role in managing the portfolio On the basis of above discussion it is analysed that portfolio manager does not face any problem in managing the portfolio in this situation as there are not much changes into the market and it is also assumed that there is not much role of managers in the same. (Darst, 2013) Due to market conditions responsibility of fund manager has been decreased as well as the role of pension fund manager has also been almost vanished. According to the efficient market hypothesis, market trends, past information, etc have not been taken into consideration so there is no need for fund manager. In investment choice plan pension fund manager has a responsibility to update the plan as well as employees portfolio (Baker and Filbeck, 2013). Therefore, it is to be assumed that there is no such situation make existence into the market since into the market there are several factors which need to be taken consideration before involving into the investment for the funds regarding retirement contribution. The situation which is described in the efficient market hypothesis does not exist because forces of market are considered to be very powerful and incorporation of these forces affects the asset or share value. In addition to this, it is concluded on the basis of efficient market hypothesis that all the investors earn same amount of revenue because the price of stocks and assets are at fair value so there is no any possibility of loss and gain and there is no need to manage the portfolio. (Baxamusa, Mohanty and Rao, 2015) At last it is concluded overall that such type of situation, like what efficient market hypothesis described, does not exist into the market and into the investment market so on that basis it is proved that efficient market hypothesis is unproved and vague. School Privatization Essays - Organizational Theory, Administration

School Privatization Our society, as a whole, has been heading toward a decentralized system of conducting its affairs. Large corporations have been getting larger , meanwhile governments have been giving up increasing amounts of their control. This decentralization has affected even former mainstays of government control, such as phone and power companies. As decentralization becomes more of a reality, there has been a great deal of debate over what controls the government should maintain or relinquish. The public school system has long been a source of frustration. Many feel the schools would be run more efficiently and with better results if privately run companies were to take over. They feel that with the existing large, encumbering bureaucracy, the government is simply unable to provide the proper base that is necessary to support a successful school system. The proponents of privatized school systems have long maintained that governments are not as knowledgeable about individual school environments as those who and they have to manage many schools, whereas the owners of a specific private subsidized school would be well informed about the school's circumstances and can concentrate on that school alone. They say that the governments role should become that of regulator, not schoolmaster, and that since the private schools do not face the political constraints that the municipal governments face, they would be more able to adapt to change. Since the operation of public schools is more bureaucratic and centralized than private subsidized schools, it is expected to inhibit rather than promote educational innovation. Private schools, being less bureaucratic and more decentralized, are expected to be more efficient organizations and to have a better perspective than their public school counterparts. They are also expected to provide a greater incentive and opportunity to come up with more innovative programs than public schools in order to stay competitive. Bureaucracy is expected to hinder initiative and efficiency, whereas the private sector in general is expected to be more dynamic and responsive because of their need to stay competitive. It is hoped that this competitiveness will foster innovation. On the other side of the debate is the group that favors continued government control over the school system. They argue that privatizing the schools would lead to a decreased focus on the needs of the children with an increased emphasis placed on the bottom line. They maintain that the companies taking over for the government would focus their attention more on cutting corners to make larger profits rather than on the education of children. With continued government control over the school system, there will remain a stability that is necessary to insure a full and equal educational opportunity for all. Having the education system privatized would create inequalities in the method that education would be provided. Those who oppose privatization agree that not only would municipal control maintain stability, but would also ensure fair and equal teatment for all. The same would not hold true if the schools were placed in private hands. Schools that do not make a profit along with teachers that are no longer needed would simply let go in order to save money or maintain profits. I can see that there are several benefits on both sides. The economic benefits are obviously in favor of a decentralized school structure. There be no bureaucracy to wade through to make the simplest decisions, in the system would allow teachers to make important ground level decisions as they see fit. This increased efficiency includes many benefits, but with what cost? What about the special needs children, or the under privileged, will the private companies take care of them? What happens when these companies don't make enough money on a school, will they close it down? The children whose schools have been closed will have to travel further and further just to get to school, if they even go. Maybe there should just be mega-schools were ten schools are combined into one, all to save the managing company money. With government control, there may not be efficiency but there is some stability. That is the important thing. Companies can open and close their doors in a day, but schools are more important than companies. Education is the key to our futures, can we afford to gamble with what is a stake? The government must become more efficient at doing its job in managing our schools, and business has proven itself to be efficient. Maybe there is a way to combine the two and receive the best of both worlds.

WAYS TO CONNECT WITH LOVED ONE essays

WAYS TO CONNECT WITH LOVED ONE essays WAYS TO CONNECT WITH LOVED ONES FAR AWAY Two years ago, I excitedly left my family and friends for my far away dream land, Canada. However, just on the second day after arriving here, the excitement was gone. I was homesick. I missed my family and my friends, and I missed my hometown. All I could do was to hurriedly call my parents. This was my experience. Many international students may have a similar experience. As international students, they study alone in strange countries. They need emotional supports from their family. They need connection with their old friends. In general, international students use letters, e-mail, telephone and online chat to keep in touch with family and friends far away. Letters, the most traditional communication method, are still used by international students. Whether writing or reading a letter, the process is an emotional experience. For instance, when I wrote a letter to my family, I felt as if I had talked with them face to face. I didnt feel lonely anymore. All I could feel was love. When receiving a letter from my parents, I often open the envelope in a rush and read it carefully word by word. When finishing it, I would read it again just in case any word was omitted. The joy brought by the letter could last for days. However, waiting for a letter is not a joyful thing anymore. Its torture. The cycle of an international mail is time-consuming. For instance, it takes ten days for a mail from my hometown to Montreal. Many students cannot stand the long wait. They choose the alternative, e-mail. Today, e-mail is widely used as a means of communication. First, the cycle time of an e-mail is very short. It is delivered as soon as the Send key is pressed. It only takes minutes or hours to arrive at the destination mail box. Second, e-mail is convenient. Unlike traditional mail, there is no stamp or post office trip for e-mail. The basic requirements are an e-mail addres ...

The future of healthcare financing Research Paper

The future of healthcare financing - Research Paper Example With many driving forces affecting the market, e.g. consumerism and internet, various alternative health care financing companies have emerged. With the market looking for new solutions, the future of health care financing will be embedded on e-health plans. Technology has become an important aspect towards the changes being experienced in the sector (Schimpff 109). Many e-plans are likely to arise in order to cater for the increasing demand for reliable health care. In addition, many multinational companies are likely to shift into the health care sector in order to tap in the increasing profits. This will aim at reducing the risks and uncertainties associated with concentrating on a single market. The future of health care will be characterized by an effective relationship between the patients and the health care providers. Initially, the relationship did not exist. However, over the past few years, the relationship between the patients and doctors has improved tremendously. This is creating a base for the future health care financing. Doctors will be an important source of information on the best health care plan. This will play a significant role in enhancing the treatment process. Economists estimates that the hospital prices for privately insured patients will continue to rise especially in the consolidated markets. They forecast that providers will maximize their revenues through excessive use of imaging, testing, and specialty care. Therefore, in future, the government will have to intervene in order to prevent overexploitation of the population by the health care providers who are leaning more on profit maximization rather than service delivery (Cleverley, James and Paula 56). This move will be forced by the widening disparity on prices between various health sectors. The future of health financing will be characterized by effective systems. The health care providers will be

Case study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 111

Case Study Example The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) might influence my neighborhood’s need by enhancing the access to health care for the vulnerable clients especially the uninsured and destitute patients (Harkness & DeMarco, 2015). Moreover, the HRSA makes positive contributions in health care delivery that might involve establishing long-term and sustainable programs that address neighborhood’s health care need. HRSA might also influence my neighborhood’s need by training and developing more health professionals to gain sufficient skills to address health needs of the poor in an efficient and cost effective manner. I must develop a plan to address care costs for my clients. The plan will include encouraging and helping the clients to claim all their health benefits. It also includes urging clients to apply for NHS-funded care that caters for all care costs (Harkness & DeMarco, 2015). I will also advice the clients to purchase "care fees annuity† that will ensure that they receive guaranteed income for life. Moreover, clients should adopt preventive care that entails visiting the doctor for physical and medical check-up that reduces health care costs for the entire family. Clients can also perform self-exams, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly to improve their immunity. I would also encourage my clients to visit state-sponsored health facilities and negotiate health

A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah - Assignment Example He narrates his ordeal passionately, giving all the finer details that leave your mouth agape and wondering in awe. Ishmael wrote this book to highlight the plight of child soldiers and the kind of trials and tribulations that they undergo. This was a protest letter of some sort to the various authorities, particularly in countries where there are rampant cases of very young boys being forced into the army to fight enemies. In the book, Ishmael covered death as a theme and indeed it stands out because people are being killed; Ishmael only survives by a freak of chance. Ishmael, together with the other child soldiers, experiences nothing but brutality; he faces problems which almost necessitate his death. For instance, if not for the timely intervention of UNICEF to rescue Ishmael and youths alike after three years of fighting in the army against fierce rebels, he would have been nothing but dead meat. With further assistance of Laura Simms, Ishmael travels to the United States of Ame rica, to New York City, where he proceeded to finish high school and graduate from college. Ishmael becomes an advocate and gets involved in a number of international organizations that deal with aiding children who are forced to be soldiers in their respective countries. He wrote this book to show the whole world how him and the other young boys, while in Sierra Leone, lead extremely brutal lives full of adversity. This is clearly brought out when at some point, as they see a fascinating beauty of the ocean, they are forced to get through a torture of walking on hot sand that burns their feet, a scene that reminds one of the simple truth – pain is sometimes so close to pleasure. They initially are taken care of by a Good Samaritan, a fisherman, and make a day of it. But it doesn’t take long before they get captured by some fierce villagers who are so scared of them that, in fact, threaten to kill them. Fortunately, they get saved by cassette tapes. Ishmael really want ed to show people how dangerously a child soldier lives and how seeing tomorrow to such children happens normally by sheer luck; he demonstrates that point when he recounts the incident when he was so scared of death every time that eventually it makes him wonder out loud: â€Å"how many more times do we have to come to terms with death before we find safety?† (Beah, 2008). At some point, the story becomes sad when Ishmael can’t get sleep, there are constant noises around, dogs are howling and running from one place to the other and all he can think about is how something bad is going to happen. The noises wake up one of his comrades, Alhaji, he suspects that something is wrong but ignores that feeling and goes back to sleep. When morning comes, Ishmael and Alhaji start to wake up the other friends. Unfortunately, Saidu doesn’t respond when they talk to him. They try to check if there’s something wrong with him and realize that he is dead. The two prepare his body ready for burial because in that village, it’s an abomination to let a dead body to stay unburied overnight. Another important theme that Ishmael intended to cover and successfully managed to do was enmity. He wanted to bring to the fore the fact that as a child soldier, one is exposed to real and even at

Evaluating The Hci Developments Over Recent Years Computer Science Essay

Evaluating The Hci Developments Over Recent Years Computer Science Essay In the following assignment I will be talking about how interfaces have improved along the years in products and computer systems, with relation to GUI (Graphical User Interfaces) and the contrast of using non graphical interfaces. For the Distinction criteria, I will explain on the improvement of using interfaces within gaming and how this has been improved with the world of motionless gaming such as Kinect. For the final Distinction criteria I will compare my interfaces with real life interfaces and talk about how they relate and how they contrast. I will conclude the assignment with my main points and any potential summaries I have. The GUI: History of the GUI: In the computing and technical world, the graphical user interface has sharpened the way we as humans have designed and improved technology over the recent years and decades. Interfaces allow the end user to look at a graphical representation on their actions which cannot be shown in real life. For example, surfing the internet and viewing landscapes that are on the other side of the world would not be possible in a real life visual perspective. The GUI (Graphical User Interface) was implemented into the Apple Lisa computer in January 1983. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak purchased the GUI technology from a corporation called Xerox at their research centre called PARC (Palo Alto Research Centre) and used the technology in the Apple Lisa computer which since then started the revolution of interfaces within technology devices. 1 The Apple Lisa Computer Before a Graphical User Interface was implemented, a fellow competitor called Microsoft developed a CLI (Command Line Interface) that resembled the name MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) on IBM Computers in 1981. IBM (International Business Machines) is a large international company which supply computer hardware and software. They used MS-DOS on their computer systems to provide an interface that required the knowledge of commands and complex wording. This limited the market to a small amount, only professors and students was able to operate it with prior knowledge. But with the release of Apple Lisa, this broadened the audience to allow less technical people to operate a computer. 2 Image displaying the MS-DOS which was used on IBMs computers Advancements With the ongoing progress of developing interfaces and applying them to a variety of screens such as LCD and LED monitors, this has allowed technical manufacturer to explore the interface and include ways of familiarising the user with HCI (Human Computer Interaction) elements. Elements such as proximity, the ability to group similar icons together to make the human think the buttons are related. Another important element of HCI is continuity. Continuity is used in most operating systems to keep the familiar colour schemes and desktops without a drastic change. This will allow users to become familiar to the interface without the need to learn to use it again. Some more advances of interfaces over the years is the technology of 3D imagery and gaming. Games such as RTS (Real Time Strategy) Starcraft II can be played with the aid of Nvidias 3D GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) series. This allows 2D content to be rendered with 3D physics and displayed using glasses. 3 With the technology of 3D arriving in the current technological world, interface design has changed in a way that humans perceive the experience. Such so that other projects have included the 3D technology such as theme park rides, 3D computer systems, computing gaming and television. This has revolutionised the way we, as humans interact with everyday devices. A large proportion of society uses technology in their everyday lives, from checking their email, surfing the internet, checking their bank balance at an ATM machine etc. Technology has been integrated into culture so deeply, that as a society we all cannot communicate and work efficiently without it. Mobile Devices and Development: In modern technological news, mobile platforms and gaming has developed on a large scale over the current years. The idea of playing simple games on a wireless mobile device anywhere started a revolution for the gaming industry, the development of computer games and interface design. In my opinion, the first major mobile platform for gaming was Snakes. Introduced to arcades in the mid 1970s. Its sequel Snakes II was eventually introduced on the Nokia 3310 in the year 2000. This successful handset was hinting game developers to in cooperate different interface design into a smaller handset device, rather than an arcade or gaming console. 4 The above image is an example of many different interfaces that Snake has been developed into. Since the thought of how to place simple gaming projects into smaller handsets and mobile phones, arguable the Smartphone and touch screen devices provided a firm platform for developers and many game companies to work with. An example of this would be the iPhone handset. The iPhone handset (iPhone 2 Generation) was implemented by Apple on January 9th 2007 and announced to the public. It was one of the most successful Smartphones and PDA (Personal Digital Assistance) integrated together. Users had the ability to surf the internet, download application to run on their handsets, make calls, take pictures and send them to another handset or computer etc. The icons were smaller, controls and commands were made for touch and point, interface design that was new to the market. 5 Current iOS interface during writing the assignment The main differences from any phone during that time, was the complexity and power of the iPhone applications and development area. Apple provided the App store to sort all applications into a centralised place for users to download and interact with. The applications correspond of utilities and maps to gaming and various map searching apps. Over the constant development of iPhone handsets it was labelled as one of the major device for mobile gaming, a label which changed the way gaming and interfaces were developed. Now devices have the ability to run high end graphics and with the iPhone 4 device, retina display was introduced (960ÃÆ'-640) and has the smallest pixels ever to be introduced on a Smartphone device. With mobile development and gaming changing the way we use interfaces, the ability to scrap the interface from touch and use our current movement was recently introduced by Microsoft, this was known as Kinect. Project Natal (Kinect) was created by Microsoft recently in late 2010 as a motion controller for gaming.  [6]  You are the controller. No gadgets, no gizmos, just you! The quote basically means that the controller is the user, and no touch or physical contact will be needed. The technology of recording motions and gestures is proving successful; with regards to future gaming it will shape the future of interfaces. 7 Mention Holograms potentai future. Comparision of Intefaces

Coal, Strip Mining, and its Environmental Effects Essay -- Essays Pape

Coal, Strip Mining, and its Environmental Effects Going to a school like Penn State entitles you to many advantages that smaller schools don’t have, such as diversity, world renowned professors, and several different majors to choose from. All of these things I knew before going to Penn State. However, one thing I was not aware of was the enormous amount of coal that the state of Pennsylvania has, and the power that its coal gives to the rest of the United States. Northeastern Pennsylvania, after all, has the only commercial deposits of anthracite coal, the premium coal for domestic use (Lecture 2/11/02). With all of coal found in Pennsylvania, there has to be ways to extract it from the hard ground in which it resides. The two ways we learned about in class were strip mining and underground mining (2/13/02). Strip mining is the coal mining procedure that I found most interesting. Strip mining, for example, has the highest productivity out of all the ways to mine coal; it extracts thirty to forty tons of coal per worker per day (2/13/02). Also,...

The Lost Duke of Wyndham Chapter Two

Several hours later Grace was sitting in a chair in the corridor outside the dowager's bedchamber. She was beyond weary and wanted nothing more than to crawl into her own bed, where she was quite certain she would toss and turn and fail to find slumber, despite her exhaustion. But the dowager was so overset, and indeed had rung so many times that Grace had finally given up and dragged the chair to its present location. In the last hour she had brought the dowager (who would not leave her bed) a collection of letters, tucked at the bottom of a locked drawer; a glass of warm milk; a glass of brandy; another miniature of her long-dead son John; a handkerchief that clearly possessed some sort of sentimental value; and another glass of brandy, to replace the one the dowager had knocked over while anxiously directing Grace to fetch the handkerchief. It had been about ten minutes since the last summons. Ten minutes to do nothing but sit and wait in the chair, thinking, thinking†¦ Of the highwayman. Of his kiss. Of Thomas, the current Duke of Wyndham. Whom she considered a friend. Of the dowager's long-dead middle son, and the man who apparently bore his likeness. And his name. His name. Grace took a long, uneasy breath. His name. Good God. She had not told the dowager this. She had stood motionless in the middle of the road, watching the highwayman ride off in the light of the partial moon. And then, finally, when she thought her legs might actually function, she set about getting them home. There was the footman to untie, and the coachman to tend to, and as for the dowager – she was so clearly upset that she did not even whisper a complaint when Grace put the injured coachman inside the carriage with her. And then she joined the footman atop the driver's seat and drove them home. She wasn't a particularly experienced hand with the reins, but she could manage. And she'd had to manage. There was no one else to do it. But that was something she was good at. Managing. Making do. She'd got them home, found someone to tend to the coachman, and then tended to the dowager, and all the while she'd thought – Who was he? The highwayman. He'd said his name had once been Cavendish. Could he be the dowager's grandson? She had been told that John Cavendish died without issue, but he wouldn't have been the first young nobleman to litter the countryside with illegitimate children. Except he'd said his name was Cavendish. Or rather, had been Cavendish. Which meant – Grace shook her head blearily. She was so tired she could barely think, and yet it seemed all she could do was think. What did it mean that the highwayman's name was Cavendish? Could an illegitimate son bear his father's name? She had no idea. She'd never met a bastard before, at least not one of noble origins. But she'd known others who had changed their names. The vicar's son had gone to live with relatives when he was small, and the last time he'd been back to visit, he'd introduced himself with a different surname. So surely an illegitimate son could call himself whatever he wanted. And even if it was not legal to do so, a highwayman would not trouble himself with such technicalities, would he? Grace touched her mouth, trying to pretend she did not love the shivers of excitement that rushed through her at the memory. He had kissed her. It had been her first kiss, and she did not know who he was. She knew his scent, she knew the warmth of his skin, and the velvet softness of his lips, but she did not know his name. Not all of it, at least. â€Å"Grace! Grace!† Grace stumbled to her feet. She'd left the door ajar so she could better hear the dowager, and sure enough, her name was once again being called. The dowager must still be overset – she rarely used Grace's Christian name. It was harder to snap out in a demanding manner than Miss Eversleigh. Grace rushed back into the room, trying not to sound weary and resentful as she asked, â€Å"May I be of assistance?† The dowager was sitting up in bed – well, not quite sitting up. She was mostly lying down, with just her head propped up on the pillows. Grace thought she looked terribly uncomfortable, but the last time she had tried to adjust her position she'd nearly got her head bit off. â€Å"Where have you been?† Grace did not think the question required an answer, but she said, nonetheless, â€Å"Just outside your door, ma'am.† â€Å"I need you to get me something,† the dowager said, and she didn't sound as imperious as she did agitated. â€Å"What is it you would like, your grace?† â€Å"I want the portrait of John.† Grace stared at her, uncomprehending. â€Å"Don't just stand there!† the dowager practically screamed. â€Å"But ma'am,† Grace protested, jumping back, â€Å"I've brought you all three of the miniatures, and – â€Å" â€Å"No, no, no,† the dowager cried, her head swinging back and forth on the pillows. â€Å"I want the portrait. From the gallery.† â€Å"The portrait,† Grace echoed, because it was half three in the morning, and perhaps she was addled by exhaustion, but she thought she'd just been asked to remove a life-sized portrait from a wall and carry it up two flights of stairs to the dowager's bedchamber. â€Å"You know the one,† the dowager said. â€Å"He's standing next to the tree, and he has a sparkle in his eye.† Grace blinked, trying to absorb this. â€Å"There is only the one, I think.† â€Å"Yes,† the dowager said, her voice almost unbalanced in its urgency. â€Å"There is a sparkle in his eye.† â€Å"You want me to bring it here.† â€Å"I have no other bedchamber,† the dowager snapped. â€Å"Very well.† Grace swallowed. Good Lord, how was she going to accomplish this? â€Å"It will take a bit of time.† â€Å"Just drag a chair over and yank the bloody thing down. You don't need – â€Å" Grace rushed forward as the dowager's body convulsed in a spasm of coughing. â€Å"Ma'am! Ma'am!† she said, bringing her arm around her to set her upright. â€Å"Please, ma'am. You must try to be more settled. You are going to hurt yourself.† The dowager coughed a few last times, took a long swallow of her warm milk, then cursed and took her brandy instead. That, she finished entirely. â€Å"I'm going to hurt you,† she gasped, thunking the glass back down on her bedside table, â€Å"if you don't get me that portrait.† Grace swallowed and nodded. â€Å"As you wish, ma'am.† She hurried out, sagging against the corridor wall once she was out of the dowager's sight. It had begun as such a lovely evening. And now look at her. She'd had a gun pointed at her heart, been kissed by a man whose next appointment was surely with the gallows, and now the dowager wanted her to wrestle a life-sized portrait off the gallery wall. At half three in the morning. â€Å"She can't possibly be paying me enough,† Grace mumbled under her breath as she made her way down the stairs. â€Å"There couldn't possibly exist enough money – â€Å" â€Å"Grace?† She stopped short, stumbling off the bottom step. Large hands immediately found her upper arms to steady her. She looked up, even though she knew who it had to be. Thomas Cavendish was the grandson of the dowager. He was also the Duke of Wyndham and thus without question the most powerful man in the district. He was in London nearly as often as he was here, but Grace had got to know him quite well during the five years she'd acted as companion to the dowager. They were friends. It was an odd and completely unexpected situation, given the difference in their rank, but they were friends. â€Å"Your grace,† she said, even though he had long since instructed her to use his given name when they were at Belgrave. She gave him a tired nod as he stepped back and returned his hands to his sides. It was far too late for her to ponder matters of titles and address. â€Å"What the devil are you doing awake?† he asked. â€Å"It's got to be after two.† â€Å"After three, actually,† she corrected absently, and then – good heavens, Thomas. She snapped fully awake. What should she tell him? Should she say anything at all? There would be no hiding the fact that she and the dowager had been accosted by highwaymen, but she wasn't quite certain if she should reveal that he might have a first cousin racing about the countryside, relieving the local gentry of their valuables. Because, all things considered, he might not. And surely it did not make sense to concern him needlessly. â€Å"Grace?† She gave her head a shake. â€Å"I'm sorry, what did you say?† â€Å"Why are you wandering the halls?† â€Å"Your grandmother is not feeling well,† she said. And then, because she desperately wanted to change the subject: â€Å"You're home late.† â€Å"I had business in Stamford,† he said brusquely. His mistress. If it had been anything else, he would not have been so oblique. It was odd, though, that he was here now. He usually spent the night. Grace, despite her respectable birth, was a servant at Belgrave, and as such privy to almost all of the gossip. If the duke stayed out all night, she generally knew about it. â€Å"We had an†¦exciting evening,† Grace said. He looked at her expectantly. She felt herself hesitate, and then – well, there was really nothing to do but say it. â€Å"We were accosted by highwaymen.† His reaction was swift. â€Å"Good God,† he exclaimed. â€Å"Are you all right? Is my grandmother well?† â€Å"We are both unharmed,† Grace assured him, â€Å"although our driver has a nasty bump on his head. I took the liberty of giving him three days to convalesce.† â€Å"Of course.† He closed his eyes for a moment, looking pained. â€Å"I must offer my apologies,† he said. â€Å"I should have insisted that you take more than one outrider.† â€Å"Don't be silly. It's not your fault. Who would have thought – † She cut herself off, because really, there was no sense in assigning blame. â€Å"We are unhurt,† she repeated. â€Å"That is all that matters.† He sighed. â€Å"What did they take?† Grace swallowed. She couldn't very well tell him they'd stolen nothing but a ring. Thomas was no idiot; he'd wonder why. She smiled tightly, deciding that vagueness was the order of the day. â€Å"Not very much,† she said. â€Å"Nothing at all from me. I imagine it was obvious I am not a woman of means.† â€Å"Grandmother must be spitting mad.† â€Å"She is a bit overset,† Grace hedged. â€Å"She was wearing her emeralds, wasn't she?† He shook his head. â€Å"The old bat is ridiculously fond of those stones.† Grace declined to scold him for his characterization of his grandmother. â€Å"She kept the emeralds, actually. She hid them under the seat cushion.† He looked impressed. â€Å"She did?† â€Å"I did,† Grace corrected, unwilling to share the glory. â€Å"She thrust them at me before they breached the vehicle.† He smiled slightly, and then, after a moment of somewhat awkward silence, said, â€Å"You did not mention why you're up and about so late. Surely you deserve a rest as well.† â€Å"I†¦er†¦Ã¢â‚¬ There seemed to be no way to avoid telling him. If nothing else, he'd notice the massive empty spot on the gallery wall the next day. â€Å"Your grandmother has a strange request.† â€Å"All of her requests are strange,† he replied immediately. â€Å"No, this one†¦well†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Grace's eyes flicked up in exasperation. How was it her life had come to this? â€Å"I don't suppose you'd like to help me remove a painting from the gallery.† â€Å"A painting.† She nodded. â€Å"From the gallery.† She nodded again. â€Å"I don't suppose she's asking for one of those modestly sized square ones.† â€Å"With the bowls of fruit?† He nodded. â€Å"No.† When he did not comment, she added, â€Å"She wants the portrait of your uncle.† â€Å"Which one?† â€Å"John.† He nodded, smiling slightly, but without any humor. â€Å"He was always her favorite.† â€Å"But you never knew him,† Grace said, because the way he'd said it – it almost sounded as if he'd witnessed her favoritism. â€Å"No, of course not. He died before I was born. But my father spoke of him.† It was clear from his expression that he did not wish to discuss the matter further. Grace could not think of anything more to say, however, so she just stood there, waiting for him to collect his thoughts. Which apparently he did, because he turned to her and asked, â€Å"Isn't that portrait life-sized?† Grace pictured herself wrestling it from the wall. â€Å"I'm afraid so.† For a moment it looked as if he might turn toward the gallery, but then his jaw squared and he was once again every inch the forbidding duke. â€Å"No,† he said firmly. â€Å"You will not get that for her this evening. If she wants the bloody painting in her room, she can ask a footman for it in the morning.† Grace wanted to smile at his protectiveness, but by this point she was far too weary. And besides that, when it came to the dowager, she had long since learned to follow the road of least resistance. â€Å"I assure you, I want nothing more than to retire this very minute, but it is easier just to accommodate her.† â€Å"Absolutely not,† he said imperiously, and without waiting, he turned and marched up the stairs. Grace watched him for a moment, and then, with a shrug, headed off to the gallery. It couldn't be that difficult to take a painting off a wall, could it? But she made it only ten paces before she heard Thomas bark her name. She sighed, stopping in her tracks. She should have known better. The man was as stubborn as his grandmother, not that he would appreciate the comparison. She turned and retraced her steps, hurrying along when she heard him call out for her again. â€Å"I'm right here,† she said irritably. â€Å"Good gracious, you'll wake the entire house.† He rolled his eyes. â€Å"Don't tell me you were going to get the painting by yourself.† â€Å"If I don't, she will ring for me all night, and then I will never get any sleep.† He narrowed his eyes. â€Å"Watch me.† â€Å"Watch you what?† she asked, baffled. â€Å"Dismantle her bell cord,† he said, heading upstairs with renewed determination. â€Å"Dismantle her†¦Thomas!† She ran up behind him, but of course could not keep up. â€Å"Thomas, you can't!† He turned. Grinned even, which she found somewhat alarming. â€Å"It's my house,† he said. â€Å"I can do anything I want.† And while Grace digested that on an exhausted brain, he strode down the hall and into his grandmother's room. â€Å"What,† she heard him bite off, â€Å"do you think you're doing?† Grace let out a breath and hurried after him, entering the room just as he was saying, â€Å"Good heavens, are you all right?† â€Å"Where is Miss Eversleigh?† the dowager asked, her eyes darting frantically about the room. â€Å"I'm right here,† Grace assured her, rushing forward. â€Å"Did you get it? Where is the painting? I want to see my son.† â€Å"Ma'am, it's late,† Grace tried to explain. She inched forward, although she wasn't sure why. If the dowager started spouting off about the highwayman and his resemblance to her favorite son, it wasn't as if she would be able to stop her. But still, the proximity at least gave the illusion that she might be able to prevent disaster. â€Å"Ma'am,† Grace said again, gently, softly. She gave the dowager a careful look. â€Å"You may instruct a footman to procure it for you in the morning,† Thomas said, sounding slightly less imperious than before, â€Å"but I will not have Miss Eversleigh undertaking such manual labor, and certainly not in the middle of the night.† â€Å"I need the painting, Thomas,† the dowager said, and Grace almost reached out to take her hand. She sounded pained. She sounded old. And she certainly did not sound like herself when she said, â€Å"Please.† Grace glanced at Thomas. He looked uneasy. â€Å"Tomorrow,† he said. â€Å"First thing, if you wish it.† â€Å"But – â€Å" â€Å"No,† he interrupted. â€Å"I am sorry you were accosted this evening, and I shall certainly do whatever is necessary – within reason – to facilitate your comfort and health, but this does not include whimsical and ill-timed demands. Do you understand me?† They stared at each other for so long that Grace wanted to flinch. Then Thomas said sharply, â€Å"Grace, go to bed.† He didn't turn around. Grace held still for a moment, waiting for what, she didn't know – disagreement from the dowager? A thunderbolt outside the window? When neither was forthcoming, she decided she could do nothing more that evening and left the room. As she walked slowly down the hall, she could hear them arguing – nothing violent, nothing impassioned. But then, she'd not have expected that. Cavendish tempers ran cold, and they were far more likely to attack with a frozen barb than a heated cry. Grace let out a long, uneven breath. She would never get used to this. Five years she had been at Belgrave, and still the resentment that ran back and forth between Thomas and his grandmother shocked her. And the worst part was – there wasn't even a reason! Once, she had dared to ask Thomas why they held each other in such contempt. He just shrugged, saying that it had always been that way. She'd disliked his father, Thomas said, his father had hated him, and he himself could have done quite well without either of them. Grace had been stunned. She'd thought families were meant to love each other. Hers had. Her mother, her father†¦She closed her eyes, fighting back tears. She was being maudlin. Or maybe it was because she was tired. She didn't cry about them any longer. She missed them – she would always miss them. But the great big gaping hole their deaths had rent in her had healed. And now†¦well, she'd found a new place in this world. It wasn't the one she'd anticipated, and it wasn't the one her parents had planned for her, but it came with food and clothing, and the opportunity to see her friends from time to time. But sometimes, late at night as she lay in her bed, it was just so hard. She knew she should not be ungrateful – she was living in a castle, for heaven's sake. But she had not been brought up for this. Not the servitude, and not the sour dispositions. Her father had been a country gentleman, her mother a well-liked member of the local community. They had raised her with love and laughter, and sometimes, as they sat before the fire in the evening, her father would sigh and say that she was going to have to remain a spinster, because surely there was no man in the county good enough for his daughter. And Grace would laugh and say, â€Å"What about the rest of England?† â€Å"Not there, either!† â€Å"France?† â€Å"Good heavens, not.† â€Å"The Americas?† â€Å"Are you trying to kill your mother, gel? You know she gets seasick if she so much as sees the beach.† And they all somehow knew that Grace would marry someone right there in Lincolnshire, and she'd live down the road, or at least just a short ride away, and she would be happy. She would find what her parents had found, because no one expected her to marry for any reason other than love. She'd have babies, and her house would be full of laughter, and she would be happy. She'd thought herself the luckiest girl in the world. But the fever that had struck the Eversleigh house was cruel, and when it broke, Grace was an orphan. At seventeen, she could hardly remain on her own, and indeed, no one had been sure what to do with her until her father's affairs were settled and the will was read. Grace let out a bitter laugh as she pulled off her wrinkled clothing and readied herself for bed. Her father's directives had only made matters worse. They were in debt; not deeply so, but enough to render her a burden. Her parents, it seemed, had always lived slightly above their means, presumably hoping that love and happiness would carry them through. And indeed they had. Love and happiness had stood up nicely to every obstacle the Eversleighs had faced. Except death. Sillsby – the only home Grace had ever known – was entailed. She'd known that, but not how eager her cousin Miles would be to assume residence. Or that he was still unmarried. Or that when he pushed her against a wall and jammed his lips against hers, she was supposed to let him, indeed thank the toad for his gracious and benevolent interest in her. Instead she had shoved her elbow into his ribs and her knee up against his – Well, he hadn't been too fond of her after that. It was the only part of the whole debacle that still made her smile. Furious at the rebuff, Miles had tossed her out on her ear. Grace had been left with nothing. No home, no money, and no relations (she refused to count him among the last). Enter the dowager. News of Grace's predicament must have traveled fast through the district. The dowager had swooped in like an icy goddess and whisked her away. Not that there had been any illusion that she was to be a pampered guest. The dowager had arrived with full retinue, stared down Miles until he squirmed (literally; it had been a most enjoyable moment for Grace), and then declared to her, â€Å"You shall be my companion.† Before Grace had a chance to accept or decline, the dowager had turned and left the room. Which just confirmed what they all knew – that Grace had never had a choice in the matter to begin with. That had been five years ago. Grace now lived in a castle, ate fine food, and her clothing was, if not the latest stare of fashion, well-made and really quite pretty. (The dowager was, if nothing else, at least not cheap.) She lived mere miles from where she had grown up, and as most of her friends still resided in the district, she saw them with some regularity – in the village, at church, on afternoon calls. And if she didn't have a family of her own, at least she had not been forced to have one with Miles. But much as she appreciated all the dowager had done for her, she wanted something more. Or maybe not even more. Maybe just something else. Unlikely, she thought, falling into bed. The only options for a woman of her birth were employment and marriage. Which, for her, meant employment. The men of Lincolnshire were far too cowed by the dowager to ever make an overture in Grace's direction. It was well-known that Augusta Cavendish had no desire to train a new companion. It was even more well-known that Grace hadn't a farthing. She closed her eyes, trying to remind herself that the sheets she'd slid between were of the highest quality, and the candle she'd just snuffed was pure beeswax. She had every physical comfort, truly. But what she wanted was†¦ It didn't really matter what she wanted. That was her last thought before she finally fell asleep. And dreamed of a highwayman.

Comparrasion of Ozmandiaze and the Ruin essays

Comparrasion of Ozmandiaze and the Ruin essays Mans Creation Cannot Last Forever. In about 450 B.C., the city of Olympia where the first Olympic games were held in 776 B.C. built a temple to honor the god Zeus. Many considered the Doric-style temple too simple, so a lavish 40-foot statue of Zeus was commissioned for the inside. Wealthy Greeks decided to move the statue to a palace in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey). Their effort prolonged its life, as fire later devastated the Olympia temple. However, the new location couldn't keep Zeus eternally safe: a severe fire destroyed the statue in A.D. 462. All that remains in Olympia are the temple's fallen columns and the foundation of the building. It is peculiar that the amazing creations of man cannot last forever; the same idea can be observed by comparing the setting, plot and irony in the poems The Ruin and Ozymandias. By examining the setting of both poems, one can perceive the idea that man-made inventions cannot last forever. The setting of The Ruin is in an old Roman city, where the wielders once built a huge city intending it to last forever, but now all that remains are Broken blocks... (41). People of the Roman city thought that their mighty kingdom, well built walls, bright buildings, and mead halls would last forever, but there is a force called wierds that does not allows mans creations to exist forever. In the same manner, the setting of Ozymandias is also related to the theme that mans creations cannot last forever. The setting concerns an ancient Egyptian desert, where Ozymandias once created his huge statue (artifact) thinking that it would last forever. However, the only object that remains consists of Two vast and trunk less legs of stone (2). Ozymandias created his huge statue to show the world how much power he had, without understanding the destructive power...

Theories of Juvenile Crime Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Theories of Juvenile Crime - Assignment Example Hence, the basic cause of juvenile delinquency is rational choice- the choice between what is more important-the need or the outcome (Hakim, S., & Blackstone, 1996). Similar to all theories, rational behavior theory has its pros and cons too. The theory is quite reliable as it explains every sort of felony (robbery, drug use, hostility, etc.). Becker and Mehlkop’s suggested theories that also prove that juveniles do not commit crimes when the probability of punishment increases (Hakim, S., & Blackstone, 1996). One of the most common criticisms of this theory is that it over emphasizes individual choice and does not integrate societal issues, such as an unfavorable living environment into a person’s potential for criminality. In addition, the theory is a bit cost-conscious. Although it claims that a juvenile will commit a crime based on rational choice, there are still many issues that the person must reflect on before deciding whether or not to risk defying the law.   â€Å"The theory explains the causation of crime by assuming that after evaluation of certain factors, an individual uses free will and rational choice in the decision-making process before committing a crime† (Books, 2010).

Does Modern Wedding Cost Too Much Research Paper

Does Modern Wedding Cost Too Much - Research Paper Example Although there are special cases of societal icons that have broken records in spending millions of dollars in wedding events, general spending by average people has increased tremendously. This paper seeks to provide succinct evidence to support the fact that modern weddings cost too much. Interestingly, planning of wedding events has become a fully functional industry that generates millions of dollars every year. Certainly, this has been primarily caused by the increase of busy lifestyles and consequently less time to spend organizing for wedding events. Couples have increasingly preferred to opt for wedding organizing services since there is increased money flow and less time to spend it due to busy lifestyles. Although the exact cost of holding a wedding event ranges from one country to another Sherrie claims, â€Å"The price for a wedding in the U.S, is $ 26, 400† (Sherrie 14). It is also claimed that the wedding â€Å"Cost will increase about 2.3% over already high 200 5 prices† (Sherrie 13). Although these statistics were taken in 2005, it can be posited that at present, costs have actually gone up further. There is overwhelming evidence indicating that the costs of modern wedding are actually high. According to a report by Fox, â€Å"the national average costs of using a wedding planner is approximately $3500 to $4000. For some couples, hiring a wedding planner is a crucial part of their wedding preparation† (Fox n.p). With the stresses of modern lifestyles, it is easy to understand why many couple opt for a wedding planner, it simply offers a relief. Although hiring a wedding planner increases the costs of the wedding, the relief offered is justified. With more people preferring wedding planner service to organize their wedding events, wedding planning business continue to flourish and offer better services thereby increasing the costs further. Holding of wedding events calls for hiring of special ceremony sites that will offer the wedding a sense of uniqueness. Renting of the ceremony sites especially for the reception, assuming that appreciable number of weddings are held in church, has increased with time. This causes an increase in overall wedding costs considering that a large percentage of the wedding resources will be spent on hiring exclusive ceremony sites such as lucrative hotels and recreational centers. According to estimates by Alliance Trust â€Å"The largest proportion of the wedding cost is spent on the hire of the venue, catering and drinks, this alone can swallow around 33% of the total cost† (Alliance Trust web). Another important aspect worth consideration, a precursor to rising wedding costs, is the upward shift in wedding age. According to Alliance Trust, â€Å"Our calculations put the average cost at ?20,000 – an onerous amount which could well explain why couples are delaying a wedding until they are more financially secure† (Alliance Trust web). This is clear evid ence that the modern society appreciates the importance of weddings to the extent that they would defer the wedding to a later date so that they could afford the increased wedding costs. A brief analysis of trends in wedding costs conducted by Wong posits, â€Å"The average price tag that is fast approaching $30,000 represents a 73 percent increase during the past 15 years† (Wong web). It is interesting to note that such a rise in spending costs can be attributed to change in lifestyle, personal

Different Generations Speak Different Languages Essay Example for Free

Different Generations Speak Different Languages Essay Different generations in the same country speak different languages? Sounds impossible, but it is indeed the case. Consider situations in which your mother does not understand what you say to your classmates, situations in which you cannot figure out what your mother refers by a simple abbreviation and situations in which your father cannot reflect your undertone of some words. Different generations speak different languages, causing conflicts and misunderstandings. According to the passage What can words do and cannot do, words have denotative meanings and connotation meanings. Denotative meanings are meanings defined by the dictionary, which cause little misunderstandings. On the other hand, connotative meanings are associated with personal experiences and are likely to cause conflicts. But in the context of communication between different generations, there are both likely to evoke misunderstandings. Some connotative meanings of words are so widely recognized by a certain generation or group of people, that they consider these meanings as denotative meanings. But these meanings are unknown to other groups and are not included in the dictionary. The word, net, for example, may mean a trap made of netting to catch fish or birds or insects in your grandfathers dictionary but means a computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange when you talk to your friends meet on the net. From this aspect, language of different generations do differ in the conception of words. Different generations may be confused by denotative meanings, not to mention by connotative meanings. The connotative meaning of a word is the associations and overtones people bring to it. When we hear a word, the thoughts and feelings we have about that word and about the person using it determine what that word ultimately means to us. (What can words do and cannot do,Weaver, Understanding Interpersonal Communication, pp. 230-333 ) Consider the word news perceived by different generations. Your grandfather may reflect news as titles in printed newspaper or radio messages while your father form in his head the television correspondent and you, a teenager thinks of web-sites. These difference in language is brought by the development of social and technology. Words and phrases have their life cycle, there are times when certain words and expressions thrive and time when they die. It is not uncommon that older generations tend to use words, phrases and expressions that are seldom used by younger generation. Moreover, young people have the tendency to make expressions short. For example, instead of saying good morning, they say morning, instead of lots of laughs, they type LOL and so on. So next time when talking to your grandmother, use less abbreviations. Difference languages spoken by different generations giving rise to unavoidable misunderstanding, so bearing in mind that different person has varied perception of words and may not understand what you mean. Dont be bothered to interpret in detail what you mean to be fully understood by other generations.

Political Maneuvering and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 Essay -- Hollow

Skepticism about government is, in many respects, part of the DNA of Americans. This skepticism is not without reason – the actions of American politicians in the 1960s and 70s caused much of America to wonder about the motives of elected officials. However, such skepticism is rarely brought up when discussing the government’s participation in denouncing oppression against the African-American community. Most assume the government enforced equal opportunity for minorities out of compassion and humanity. However, much like the other major actions of the government during that era, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a groundbreaking law condemning segregation, was not devoid of personal motives. The Black community was not oblivious to this fact, and voiced its outrage through different mediums. Within the literary community, James Baldwin stands out as an author who especially attacked the government, claiming all the benefits his community was now receiving was not the result of compassion, but rather was the result of politics as usual. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is considered groundbreaking legislation for a number of reasons. Prior to this bill, there was no legislation that made segregation, or discrimination against African-Americans illegal. Taking a closer look at the law will reveal the various facets through which the Civil Rights Act denounces segregation. While this legislation is composed of eleven titles, it is really the first seven which caused the most noticeable change in the American landscape.
